Wood and the craftsmanship involved in handcrafted woodwork have been a part of my life ever since I first drew breath, as my father, Ernie Lupton, was a senior technical representative for a midland timber merchant. My interest in wood evolved into teaching, and after retiring from my position as the Head of a Design & Technology department a number of years ago, I found the time to return to the craft of woodturning with renewed enthusiasm! I am a proud member of the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain and also belong to two local clubs.
My work is produced by hand at a woodturning lathe using traditional and contemporary tools, processes, and equipment. I work with homegrown timbers like Ash and Sycamore, as well as exotic timbers from around the globe whenever they can be responsibly sourced, such as Zebrano or Padauk. I enjoy creating both purely utilitarian and artistic pieces of wooden art, often enhancing bland timbers through techniques like pyrography, piercing, and airbrushing.
Images of my woodwork showcase the variety and quality of the products I produce. Most of the pieces illustrated here are no longer available as they have been gifted to friends and relatives. However, if you are interested, many items can be replicated —though they will never be identical. If you have a particular interest in a piece or just want to learn more about my work, please feel free to message or email me at vancelupton@hotmail.com
